Nanticoke Automotive Inc. Celebrates 30 Years of Service to Seaford
On May 12, 2016 Carlyle and Marcia Windley celebrated the 30th anniversary of owning and operating Nanticoke Automotive located at 750 Norman Eskridge Highway in Seaford. In 1986 Carlyle decided he no longer wanted to be an employee and needed to fulfill his entrepreneurial passion and lifelong desire to start his own business. He resigned his position as Assistant General Manager with Hertrich Pontiac Buick Co. Armed with a business plan and the courage to take the risks involved in starting a small business, he leased the former Montgomery Ward Catalog Store and renovated it to house an auto service business. Three renovations and 30 years later he owns and operates a successful 6 bay auto sales and service center and leases a storefront to a Federated Auto Parts store at that same location.
The auto repair and maintenance business has seen many changes over the last 30 years. In building his business from the ground up, Carlyle felt he needed to supplement his financial and business management experience with technical knowledge equivalent to that of his certified staff. This knowledge would be critical in understanding what tools, equipment and processes would be vital to deliver a high quality work product and customer satisfaction required to insure long term success. As a certified master technician he has the ability to more effectively manage the business to deal with the constant technology changes in the automotive industry. It also allows him to maintain a strong technical relationship with his employees. In 1986 a lot of the repair business competition came from gas stations with small repair shops. Today due to the ever changing technology the competition has narrowed down to automotive dealers and businesses like Nanticoke Automotive who have the expertise and resources to stay current with the latest technology.
Every business must distinguish themselves to maintain a competitive edge. At Nanticoke the motto is “We Do it All”. The objective is to give the customer a one stop resource, able to provide all the various services needed without the inconvenience of appointments with multiple specialty shops. In addition, Windley strives for business outcomes that are fair and positive for all including the customer, the employees, the company and the community. Integrity, competence, and comprehensive service are all ingredients of the Nanticoke Automotive philosophy.
The complexity of today’s automobile has made it difficult for customers to understand repair and maintenance requirements. Business reputation is therefore a key factor to convince a customer that a recommended repair and associated cost are necessary, fair, and justified. Going the extra mile to solve a problem in the most efficient manner is therefore very important. For example, a recent customer brought in a car with a transmission problem and likely expected an expensive repair bill. Many of today’s car functions are computer controlled, so as an initial check, technicians decided to verify that the software was up to date. Using a laptop they downloaded the latest software and updated the car’s computer. The result was that the transmission problem was resolved without turning a wrench. Everyone was happy. So whether it is senior discounts on Tuesdays or military discounts any day the objective is to make it right for all.
Nanticoke Automotive offers a wide range of services to their customers. Three certified technicians with a combined 75 years of experience, 44 at Nanticoke, provide professional automotive and light truck repair, as well as thorough routine maintenance to help you get the most from your vehicle. All work is done according to factory schedules and specifications. And to keep you rolling, Nanticoke Automotive sells, installs, services, and stands behind the nation's best-known tire brands. In addition to vehicle maintenance and repair services, Nanticoke sells and buys used vehicles.
The Windleys are also involved in the community. Carlyle is a past recipient of the Seaford Chamber Business Person of the Year Award as well as Customer Service Award. He is an officer in the Seaford Lions Club, a trustee at St John’s United Methodist Church, board member of the Blades Economic Development Corporation (BEDCO), a Ducks Unlimited committee member, and serves on the Seaford Chamber Board. Both he and Marcia are on the Delaware committee for Autism Speaks which promotes autism awareness for lower Delaware. Nanticoke Automotive also tries to be a good neighbor. When some neighborhood kids come by with a flat tire on their bike, they can get some free air or if necessary a repair job.
